Meet Lisa C. Jacobson, psy.d.
It’s time to develop the understanding and tools to gain a genuine sense of control over your life.
Ready to recognize and quiet the unhealthy monologue playing in your head?
You’re in the right place.
I’m Dr. Lisa Jacobson
I’ve been helping clients overcome their anxiety for over 25 years.
My psychodynamic and family therapy background enables me to conceptualize and communicate the impact of your history and relationships on your current struggle. In practice, we will focus on cognitive and behavioral techniques to expose, challenge and change unhealthy thinking, behaving and relating. This takes place in the context of my person-centered, strength-based approach to clients, wherein you will feel respected, validated, empowered and valued, and come to recognize and cultivate the resources you already possess.
I explain how therapy with me works in this way:
Each client’s history, circumstances, challenges and needs are different, and I want to begin to develop a thorough understanding of these through your initial evaluation. Your unique story will be central to our work together. However, there are universal concepts that are helpful to understand.
Without realizing it, many of us focus our energy on trying to solve problems or worry about things that are hypothetical. They are either things that could happen, or they are things we imagine are happening, such as others’ thoughts about us. They are based in the past or future, but nonetheless feel very real to us in the present. We are unable to do anything about these situations and feel out of control, paralyzed, anxious, and can’t get these thoughts off our minds. Through our work together, you will recognize, understand and correct these tendencies in your thinking and learn to focus instead on facts and things you can control in the present.
Further, we all operate on deeply ingrained scripts and internal monologues. They are so second nature, we often aren’t even aware of them. In our work together, I will help you understand and recognize these patterns of thinking and behaving, in order to correct inaccurate negative self-talk and make conscious choices, rather than automatically reacting.
Understanding how anxiety impacts you is the first step to combatting it and achieving a sense of control. That, coupled with tools and practice applied to your current life and relationship challenges, will lead to a lasting experience of strength and calm.
My style
I balance a warm, inviting atmosphere with an active, engaged approach.
Opening up and sharing personal and painful thoughts and feelings can be difficult, especially with someone you’ve just met. I am always humbled by my clients’ frequent remarks that it is so easy to talk to me, right from the start. This is the foundation of the relationship I work to cultivate. I begin by taking the time to really get to know you and your unique needs, leading clients to often describe feeling heard and well understood.
While I work hard to establish an environment where you feel comfortable and can speak freely, I will collaborate with you on your journey. Clients have described prior experiences, wherein their therapists said very little. That is not me! While you will always be the driver, I am an active passenger on the ride. I will offer feedback, tools, suggestions and ideas for you to consider. My clients express that the connections I help them recognize and the recommendations I make are extremely insightful and helpful.
Specializing in challenges around life’s transitions, I view our work together in the context of a lifelong resource, much like physical healthcare providers. Clients often discontinue treatment after their current goals are met, only to return at another phase of their lives when they face new struggles. They find being able to dive right back in with someone they know and trust so valuable. I find it such a privilege to be a part of their lives in this way over time.
